PhD Scholarship

The INZIN Institute and Trienekens offer dedicated graduate students the opportunity to apply for a fully funded PhD scholarship in the area of:

“The development of processes for resource-efficient treatment and recovery of municipal solid waste in Sarawak, Malaysia

The INZIN Institute is a Think Tank that scientifically supports and promotes the necessary structural change from today’s industrial society to a sustainable industrial society. The complexity of structural change requires long-term scientific engagement. The scientific objective is to develop models and scenarios that show long-term perspectives on essential topics in different industries. The scholarships are endowed by companies and thus offer attractive career opportunities. The scholarship holders earn their graduation at the Clausthal University of Technology.

The Trienekens Group has been providing waste-management solutions for municipalities as well as for commercial and industrial partners for more than nine decades. Solutions range from collection and sorting, to recycling and energy recovery, and final disposal by means of sanitary and secure landfilling. In Malaysia, Trienekens operates the Integrated Waste Management System for the State of Sarawak; the successful integration of collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of municipal and scheduled waste.

Requirements:

  • MSc degree in engineering with a specialization in waste management, environmental sciences or a related interdisciplinary field like Environmental Management or Environmental Science
  • Experience in Environmental Impact or Life Cycle Assessment is advantageous
  • References from the field of civil-, environmental engineering or waste management are advantageous
  • Ability to work in an international context as a team-player as well as independently
  • Fluency in English, German language skills are desirable

The student is encouraged to contribute to the formulation of the topic. Exemplary tasks may include:

  • Description of the current waste and environmental management situation in the various regions of Sarawak and neighboring states (e.g. Singapore, Kalimantan)
  • Analysis of the activities and waste-composition of the formal and informal sector in Sarawak, Malaysia
  • Identification of the techniques used to treat MSW (Municipal Solid Waste)
  • Development of treatment/recovery options promoting a sustainable use of resources (e.g. Recycling, Waste to Energy)
  • Recommendation of technologies for the Kuching area (regionalization) in respective to the current waste management infrastructure as well as the current and future policy landscape
  • Proposal for the long-term financing of the required services
